They’re Sexy, But Are Airstreams Worth It?

People ask me all the time, are Airstreams worth it? I admit it, I love an iconic American brand. There are dozens of other brands I could have chosen but there’s something about purchasing an item made by craftsmen that appeals to me. That’s why when I decided to sell my motorhome, I couldn’t resist buying one of American’s most iconic brands: Airstream.

I’ve always loved Airstream’s quality, design, and sustainability. I was drawn to the airstream trailer because it is simple yet sophisticated. This travel trailer has all of what you need for a comfortable stay on the road but doesn’t come with many amenities or an unnecessary amount of space that would make it difficult to store when not

Are Airstreams Worth It?

In my opinion, Airstreams are well worth the price. Airstream trailers have a starting price of around $40,000 which may seem steep.

But I believe that the quality and design are worth it. It’s an investment in me and my lifestyle that I can eventually pass on to my daughter or grandchildren.

Conventional travel trailers have an average life of 15 years while a well-cared-for Airstream can easily last 40 or more years.

Airstreams last for many years. In fact, the first airstream trailer is still running today after being originally built in the 1930s. More than 70 percent of Airstreams ever built are still in use today.

Why Are Airstreams So Expensive?

Airstreams are made with an all-aluminum body. The aluminum is aircraft grade and is riveted to the steel frame with more than 4000 rivets. This makes Airstreams lightweight and very durable.

In addition, Airstreams have a two-year warranty and are manufactured in America. That’s something you’ll never find with other brands.

Airstream trailer prices start at about $40,000 and run as high as $160,000 but they come equipped with high-quality components as well as quality workmanship. The quality and craftsmanship that goes into each airstream trailer are what sets it apart from other travel trailers.

Can I Buy a Used Airstream?

I actually bought my Airstream used from a private party right here in my hometown. Airstreams hold their value very well but all RVs depreciate after you drive them off the lot. Buying used is a smart move in my opinion.

My Airstream had been taken out only five times and was in beautiful condition. I replaced the bumper because it was bent and it hadn’t been winterized properly so a valve on the toilet had to be replaced but those were the only problems I encountered as a result of the previous owners.

There were many other used Airstreams available but it’s important to keep in mind that not all of them have been cared for as they should be, which can lead to problems down the line. It’s a good idea to have your potential purchase inspected by an RV inspector who is familiar with Airstreams.

What Is The Most Popular Airstream Model?

My 2016 Flying Cloud

The most popular model of Airstream is the Flying Cloud. The Flying Cloud model was first introduced in 1949 and was popular through the 1950s. The model was reintroduced in 2009 and has become the most popular model in the Airstream lineup. The base price of a 2021 Flying Cloud is $78,000.

What Is The Least Expensive Airstream?

Airstream Basecamp
Airstream Basecamp 16′

The Basecamp is Airstream’s least expensive model. The basecamp looks a bit different but don’t let that fool you. It’s the same quality and dependability as the more traditional Airstream models. Basecamps began with a 16′ model but a new 20′ model was introduced for 2021. You can find more information about the Basecamp lineup here.

Do Airstreams Have Slideouts?

No, Airstream does not currently make a travel trailer with a slideout. Over the years they did make a couple of travel trailers with a slideout but discontinued the practice due to low demand and undesirable added weight in models with slideouts. The models are listed below.

  • Airstream Safari Slide-Out 28’ Travel Trailer

I’ve personally seen a couple of these Airstreams with slideouts but only from the outside.

What Are the Advantages of Airstreams?

A quality you’ll never find with other brands that undoubtedly make Airstreams worth it.

  • Airstreams last for many years
  • 70% of airstream trailers still on the road today
  • Airstreams are made in america and manufactured by craftsmen
  • Airstreams come with a two year warranty
  • They are made with high quality components as well as workmanship
  • Airstreams hold their resale value better than any other brand of travel trailer
  • You become a part of the Airstream community

Why did I choose an Airstream?

My first two RVs were brand new and complete junk. When the time came to choose the one I’d continue my travels in, I chose Airstream. I’m thankful every day that I made that decision. Not having the agonizingly, chronic problems with my rolling home makes Airstreams worth it.

When I decided to sell my motorhome, I looked for the best value. I found an airstream trailer and it has been the perfect fit. These high-quality, durable trailers are as good as their reputation. I’ll never buy another brand. There’s a reason Airstream owners are a loyal bunch.

Are Airstreams worth it? In my opinion, absolutely.
